Donations for Victims of Cyclone Sidr.

Christmas seems such a distant memory now, but just prior to the holiday season Shah Hassan, GIS Technician at Beddington Lane was so moved by the recent and traumatic events caused by Cyclone Sidr in his parents Country of Bangladesh, that he raised £100.

Shah reminded AccordMP staff that Christmas was a time for giving and Eid (the festival after Ramadan which celebrates the end one months fasting) a time of sacrificing. Shah set about raising donations for the victims of the cyclone, which had taken the lives of more than 5,000 people; some 500,000 homes have been destroyed, while millions had been left stranded.

A collection box was left in reception until the 18th December where donations totalled £34.36p. This also included one anonymous donation of a bag of coins that was left on Shah’s desk.
Further efforts by Shah saw his final total of £100 by donations from friends and family being raised for this good cause.

On the 31st January Shah Hassan and Gary Burt, Customer Liaison Officer for AccordMP had the pleasure of attending the offices of Muslim Aid where Shah  (pictured left) presented his donation to Tarak Ali, Fundraising Officer .

Abdul Jolil Miah, Fundraising Manager at Muslim Aid said, “We are very grateful for all his fundraising efforts and donations.  In the short-term Muslim Aid has been creating small cash-for-work schemes to activate the local community and provide cash to restart small scale local economies. Long-term we are working with experts to develop housing that will be more resistant to cyclones and flooding in the future, ensuring that we are able to rehabilitate livelihoods at the same time”.
